Patched Works 100 Blocks of Summer–Block 30

DIANE_30Block of the day: #30

Section: Rectangles

Featured Quilter:  Diane M

Diane says:  If you make one long two color strip set and keep cutting it in half and sewing it back together this block goes together in no time.  Make sure your ends are straight, no fish tailing!

Patched Works 100 Blocks of Summer–Block 29

SUSIE_29Block of the day: #29

Section: Rectangles

Featured Quilter:  Susie

Susie says:  I am accumulating quite a stash of 1" strips in my 100 Blocks of Summer basket.  I am keeping my smaller leftovers there too.  I look there first in choosing fabric so my blocks will work together. I will surely need a bigger basket soon.

Additional blocks made by:  Jen, Lisa & Mary

JEN_29 LISA_29 MARY_29

Mary says:  Remember what I said about "fussy cutting"?  I chose to vary the block in the book so I could add a great fussy cut piece.  Instead of the 2 rectangles in the middle of the block, I cut one piece 3 1/2" by 4 1/2" of the cute mannequin. The two borders frame it out very nicely.

Patched Works 100 Blocks of Summer–Block 28

LISA_28Block of the day: #28

Section: Rectangles

Featured Quilter:  Lisa

Lisa says:  I named my block Star Blues.
This is a great place to highlight a favorite print. I used a strong contrast between the background pieces and added the stars for drama. This is an easy block but you need to sew accurately to have everything match.

Patched Works 100 Blocks of Summer–Block 27

RHONDA_27Block of the day: #27

Section: Rectangles

Featured Quilter:  Rhonda

Rhonda says:  Easy one, just cut 1 strip of each color, 2” x about 21”, sew them together and then cut that into 3-1/2” sections, join as shown in the book.

Fabrics Used: Kona Hibiscus, “Little Bits” by Tula Pink (didn’t have the fabric shown in her book).

Additional blocks made by:  Jen & Mary

JEN_27 MARY_27

Mary says:  This is a very simple block, but it's the fabrics you choose that can make it exceptional.  I paired these two fabrics because I thought it looked like a sunset viewed through the forest.

JEN_26Block of the day: #26

Section: Rectangles

Featured Quilter:  Jen

Jen says:  I really don’t like my choice of fabrics for this block.  But I know that once it’s with all of the others it will be fine.

Additional blocks made by:  Mary

Mary says:  I let my back-seat driver (Allison) sew this block as she has been wanting to get in on the action.  She is just a beginning quilter but I learned a valuable lesson from her:  Slow Down!  She did an excellent job with this block because she sewed nice and even and slow.  I'm going to try it, I'll let you know.

Patched Works 100 Blocks of Summer–Block 24

SUSIE_24Block of the day: #24

Section: Rectangles

Featured Quilter:  Susie

Susie says:  Pay attention to layout before you sew the rows together. Treat yourself to a new seam ripper. How about a some new pins too?  New tools are wonderful!

Additional blocks made by:  Jen & Mary

JEN_24 MARY_24

Mary says:  This was another scary block!  My strategy for this block was to maximize my cutting accuracy as there are 21 pieces to sew together and it couldn't be done with strip piecing.  I did this by using my June Tailor Quarter Cut ruler to cut all the pieces.  I also pressed open every seam with my mini-iron to keep the strips as flat as possible.  Mission accomplished!  I'm gaining confidence with every block.

Patched Works 100 Blocks of Summer–Block 23

LISA_23Block of the day: #23

Section: Rectangles

Featured Quilter:  Lisa

Lisa says:  I named my block Dog Run Blues.
This block could easily be strip pieced. I used a directional print(the sweet little dog conversational print from my stash) so I cut and pieced it traditionally. In my effort to tone down the strong whites in some of my fabrics, I decided to coffee dye them. Some were already blocks (like this one) and some fabrics. I did this by brewing a pot of strong coffee and then pouring it in a pan with the fabrics and cooking it on low for about an hour. It worked to take the brightness out of some of the whites, but on this block I found that one of the blues ran.  I decided to keep the block as it is a part of the story of my quilt.

Additional blocks made by:  Jen, Mary & Susie

JEN_23 MARY_23 SUSIE_23

Mary says:  This section of rectangle blocks will provide a number of opportunities for "fussy cutting".  I would encourage you to look at your fabrics to see what you may have to showcase in these blocks.  As you can see, this little motif fit perfectly in the 2 1/2' cut squares.

Patched Works 100 Blocks of Summer–Block 22

RHONDA_22Block of the day: #22
Section: Rectangles
Featured Quilter:  Rhonda
Rhonda says:  My Birthday block. Happened to land right on my birthday, so I used Kona Emerald which is the color of the year and the beige “Prince Charming by Tula Pink” which was in the swag bag.  I realized that by the completion of this book, everyone in my family will have a Birthday Block and be a year older.

Mary says:  I wanted to show off a beautiful larger print in this block so I reversed the fabric placement and made the majority of the block a print with a solid accent.

Patched Works 100 Blocks of Summer–Block 20

DIANE_20 Block of the day: #20
Section: Rectangles
Featured Quilter:  Diane M.
Diane says:  I love how bold this block is!

Additional blocks made by: Jen & Mary
JEN_20 Mary 20
Mary says:  This block scared me!  All those tiny 1 1/2" squares.  I originally skipped this block and wasn't going to attempt it at all but I was scolded by my daughter and told that not doing it was unacceptable (who's the parent here??) .  She actually helped me come up with this design.  I cut (2)  2 1/2" squares of the solid and (2)  2 1/2' squares of the print to replace each section in the center that had been made up of a 1 1/2" by 2 1/2" piece and two 1 1/2' squares.  The finished block isn't as detailed as the original, but it is it's own unique block that is not anywhere else in the book so I think Tula would approve!

SUSIE_19Block of the day: #19
Section: Rectangles
Featured Quilter:  Susie
Susie says:  I love how the Kaffe shot cottons look in my blocks.  It is helpful to use Best Press, pin and slow slower. It is a thinner fabric with some stretch. The colors and shimmer are beautiful and worth the extra effort.

Patched Works 100 Blocks of Summer–Block 18

LISA_18Block of the day: #18
Section: Rectangles
Featured Quilter:  Lisa
Lisa says:  I named my block Rail Blues.
Strip piecing is the only way to do this block. I cut 2 full strips of each color and cut them at the fold to get 3 half strips of each color. Seam allowance is very important here! But it is so nice when you are done!  Press strip sets vertically to keep them from bowing.

Patched Works 100 Blocks of Summer–Block 17

RHONDA_17Block of the day: #17
Section: Rectangles
Featured Quilter:  Rhonda
Rhonda says:  This block goes together faster if you just cut 3 long strips, 1” x approx. 18” of each color, sew them together and then cut 3-1/2” sections.
Hint: If you turn this block over and the seam allowances are all almost touching, your block is a success.
Fabrics used: Tula Pink “Swallows”, Kona Hibiscus
