Kentucky Crossroads is pieced per the directions on page 52, templates on page 114 & foundation on page 116 OR Paper Pieced using the Supplemental Packet offered at Patched Works.
Kelli – Civil War Reproduction Fabrics
Kelli says: There are MANY triangles in the block…check, double check and triple check that all triangles are going the correct way. I did this and STILL flipped one of my strips the wrong way. Oh well….I’m leaving it, I decided it’s called Kentucky Crossroads for a REASON!
Jen – “Sparkler” Fat Stack, a beautiful blend of Purple, Blue and Green Kona Solids
Jen says: Take the time to write your color locations on your foundations. Otherwise you will be second, third and fourth guessing yourself. This block is not difficult but rather extremely time consuming. You may want to consider using an Add-an-Eighth ruler for this block instead of the Add-a-Quarter ruler. Using the Green Add-an-Eighth ruler cut down tremendously on my bulk and make it easier to join my sections which stayed at ¼” seams. Take your time and this block will get done. I’ll admit, upon finishing my first response was not, WOW it looks great but rather to be thankful that I never had to make this block again in a 6” size!

Loyal Union Sampler Block F-5 Kansas Star
Kansas Star is pieced per the directions on page 51 OR Paper Pieced using the Supplemental Packet offered at Patched Works.
Leslie – Midwinter Reds by MODA
Leslie says: I had fun fussy cutting the squares from two fabrics with the same print. The 9 squares are easily paper pieced. Use pins to line up the points when joining squares and rows. Press seams open that they lay flat where the points meet.
Stephanie – Downton Abbey
Stephanie says: My fabric reminds me of my grandmother’s plates, here’s a pic!
Tip for this block, use some fabric glue (our favorite is the Sewline Glue Stick) to hold the square in place while you’re piecing. Make’s it easier so everything stays lined up!

Jonathan’s Satchel is pieced per the directions on page 51.
Mary – William Morris Fabrics by MODA with Batik Backgrounds
Mary says: The William Morris prints I’m using are just so beautiful I had to take this opportunity to “fussy cut” for this block. If you press the units that go around the center of the block towards the center your block will lay nice and flat.

Jewel Box is pieced per the directions on page 50.
Julie: Elm Creek Quilts; The Giving Quilt This block was put together by PW Customer Debbie D.
Debbie D. says: Decrease stitch length when you make your strip set for the 4-patches.
Kelli – Civil War Reproduction Fabrics
Kelli says: With so many seams in this block, when putting it together, PIN!!! Pinning will help all your seams line up perfectly!

Loyal Union Sampler Block F-2 Iowa Star
Iowa Star is pieced per the directions on page 49 and template on page 115 OR Paper Pieced using the Supplemental Packet offered at Patched Works.
Leslie – Midwinter Reds by MODA
Leslie says: I cut the center square C according to the traditional piecing because I wanted to “fussy cut” the fabric. Then I paper pieced the corner squares and set in square C to them. To set in this square, sew up to the seam line and do a little back stitch to hold. Start your next seam on the other side of the seam line that you just sewed up to.
Jen – “Sparkler” Fat Stack, a beautiful blend of Purple, Blue and Green Kona Solids
Jen says: I think this is such an eye catching block. I only wish I had a little more contrast between my two purples.
Julie: Elm Creek Quilts; The Giving Quilt This block was put together by PW Customer Jadine H.
Jadine H says: Don’t remove the foundation paper until the blocks are assembled. The smaller stitch length, the easier the paper is to remove. Removing the paper is best done outside – just let it fly!

Loyal Union Sampler Block F-1 Indiana
Indiana is pieced per the directions on page 48 OR Paper Pieced using the Supplemental Packet offered at Patched Works.
Leslie – Midwinter Reds by MODA
Leslie says: The paper piecing is simple but putting the center 3 squares together and then sewing on the side rows is a bit of a challenge. Take time to match those points and then press the seams open where those points meet.

Loyal Union Sampler Block E-11 Improved Four-Patch
Improved Four-Patch is pieced per the directions on page 48. The template on page 115 is INCORRECT. The inner dashed square should be 1 1/16" and the solid line should be 1/4" outside the dashed line. To print an updated template click HERE.
OR Paper Pieced using the Supplemental Packet offered at Patched Works.
Mary – William Morris Fabrics by MODA with Batik Backgrounds
Mary says: I chose to paper piece this block as the template the book has you cut appears to be 2-1/16” square! I didn’t think I could do that as accurately as I would need to, but paper piecing is a very accurate technique and I’m glad that’s the path I chose!
Julie: Elm Creek Quilts; The Giving Quilt This block was put together by PW Customer Vikki S.
Vikki S: Template C is too large. I cut squares 1-5/8” and it worked perfectly.

Loyal Union Sampler Block E-10 Illinois
Illinois is pieced per the directions on page 47 OR Paper Pieced using the Supplemental Packet offered at Patched Works.
Julie Q – Scrumptious by MODA
Julie Q says: This was one of the easiest blocks to make, in my humble opinion. I paper pieced mine using the layout and instructions in the Loyal Union Sampler pack for this month. When you're piecing small blocks with lots of pieces think about using smaller seams. I used 1/8" seams instead of the usual 1/4" seams. And I trimmed after piecing, every time, just to keep things neat and tidy. I usually press my seams open, especially since these are such small blocks but I only pressed the two seams where the sections were joined. Just made my life easier!
Leslie – Midwinter Reds by MODA
Leslie says: The paper pieced version is easy and straight forward. You will have a very thick seam where the outside rows and center row meet. Clip up to the seam line on each side of the seam intersection and press that intersection open. It will lay nice and flat.
Julie: Elm Creek Quilts; The Giving Quilt This block was put together by PW Customer Cathy B.
Cathy B. says: I’m not a fan of how she did the flying geese.

Loyal Union Sampler Block E-8 Honeybee
Honeybee is pieced per the directions on page 46 and templates on page 115.
Diane – Fall Blend, A Fabulous mix of Kim Schaefer Fabrics
Diane says: Template C = 1-5/8” square.
I did fusible appliqué on outside teardrops. My tip is to use monofilament top thread with a very small zig zag stitch. If you have an extra finger on your bobbin, I thread bobbin thread through it and I drop my top tension to zero. This pulls the top thread down to the back and makes a nice appliqué finish.
