MODA Modern Building Blocks Quilt a Long

At Spring Quilt Market, I saw this awesome quilt in the MODA booth. For me, this was not just another Progressive Patchwork Program, Block of the Month, Block of the Day, call it what you will...

This is a blueprint of a quilt with a solid color option. Graphic instructions providing a launch pad for quilters to share their favorite ways to construct each block.

Please join us over the next weeks as we share our vision of completing this quilt!

If you are local, we are offering monthly SEWRORITY meetings complete with pins, a binder and the pattern for $25. Our monthly meetings are the third Wednesday of the month at 10:30 or 6:30 in the classroom at Patched Works in Elm Grove, WI. The meetings are lecture demo style with block show and tell from our SEWRORITY members.

If you are reading from afar, I invite you to play along. Whether you have your pattern already or you need one to get going, let us know!

We will be making one block a week. Easy peasy! This quilt doesn't have to take over your world with just one simple block a week. Every Wednesday we will be posting a new block. We won't be going in exact number order

We will kick off the program tomorrow, 10/1/2014. We will be going for the next 48 weeks so don't fret that you are too late if you aren't ready or don't see this for a while.

Whether you complete the program with us or on your own, please share your blocks along the way!

I-2 Mary

Mary – William Morris Fabrics by MODA with Batik Backgrounds

Mary says:   I chose to paper piece this block.  If I were to make this block again, I would cut:

(1) 4-1/2” Square and sub-cut into 4 pieces for the corner triangles (As instructed) but cut a larger square to sub-cut for the setting triangles.  You would also have more room to work with when placing pieces A1, A5, B1 & B5

I-2 NancyT

Julie: Elm Creek Quilts; The Giving Quilt This block was put together by PW Customer Nancy T.

Nancy T says: Use the template! Tried with and without – definitely works best with. Otherwise fairly standard block assembly.

I-1 Jen

Jen – “Sparkler” Fat Stack, a beautiful blend of Purple, Blue and Green Kona Solids

Jen says:  While this publication calls this block “Prosperity” I’ve made it many times by the name “Wisconsin Block.”  I’ve seen this block in many counties throughout Wisconsin on the side of barns.  I decided to give the templates a try.  I traced them onto cardstock and English Paper Pieced my block.  I HAVE paper pieced this block many times before, that is definitely the way to go!

H-10 Mary

Mary – William Morris Fabrics by MODA with Batik Backgrounds

Mary says:  If I were to do this block over, I would definitely press the seams in the center pinwheel section open.  There are 8 seams intersecting there all at once.

Leslie says:  I found it very helpful to write my fabric choices on the paper pieces.  Once you have the corner units sewn on, you can put it all together in three rows.

Stephanie – Downton Abbey

Stephanie says:   The smallest parts of this block are the most important.  Watch to make sure your points match up.  Also, choose a color that will stand out to draw interest to your blocks.

Leslie says:  When joining dark squares to light rectangles, press toward the dark fabric.  Then when joining the strips, the pieces will butt together at the seam lines.

H-8 RosemaryM

Julie: Elm Creek Quilts; The Giving Quilt This block was put together by PW Customer Rosemary M.

Rosemary M says: If a seam is uneven take it out and re-do. The small discrepancies add up!

Loyal Union Sampler Block H-7 Peace And Plenty

This block is pieced per the directions on page 69.

H-7 Peace and Plenty

H-7 Mary

Mary – William Morris Fabrics by MODA with Batik Backgrounds

Mary says:  Pay close attention to the orientation of the half-square triangles and the other triangles in this block. As you may notice, my block does not have a pinwheel in the center but I think it’s a good looking block all the same.

H-7 CathyD

Julie: Elm Creek Quilts; The Giving Quilt This block was put together by PW Customer Cathy D.

Cathy D says: When sewing the half square triangles I put the needle down, lift the foot up and then slide the point under. This helps so the point doesn’t get stuck in the throat plate.

Stephanie says:  This is such a nice, precise block with paper piecing!  For your fabric selection, choose something with a busy pattern, like a blender fabric.

Jen – “Sparkler” Fat Stack, a beautiful blend of Purple, Blue and Green Kona Solids

Jen says:  I know what this quilt needs…MORE Teeny Tiny 45 Degree Diamonds!  Oh but wait, we haven’t done long narrow ones yet!  I traced the templates in the book onto card stock and English Paper Pieced this block.  Whew, it’s a few less pieces than most of the ones I’ve done using this method!
