H-5 North Star

H-4 Jen

Jen – “Sparkler” Fat Stack, a beautiful blend of Purple, Blue and Green Kona Solids

Jen says:  I know I keep saying it with this months blocks but I LOVE how this one turned out!  Another one of my Fave’s!!  I traced the templates for this one and English Paper Pieced it; quick and easy as far as EPP goes!

H-5 Stephanie

Stephanie – Downton Abbey

Stephanie says:  Be careful attaching the outer pieces, if you're not careful you could attach the wrong ones.  I continue to amaze myself with how my piecing skills are coming along!  I feel like a rock star every time one of these blocks comes out perfectly!

H-3 Jen

Jen – “Sparkler” Fat Stack, a beautiful blend of Purple, Blue and Green Kona Solids

Jen says:  This is another one of my all time favorite blocks to make.  I really like how my three greens play off of each other.  I’m glad I added some additional selections beyond my first pick of 17 fabrics!

H-3 Stephanie

Stephanie – Downton Abbey

Stephanie says:  I’ve had a hard time incorporating the orange from the Downton Abbey line.  I’ve been putting it off for a while.  I really think the orange and purple speaks for itself, this is a FANTASTIC block!  Have fun with the color combinations.  The block looks tricky but paper piecing makes is really easy!

G-11 Mary

Mary – William Morris Fabrics by MODA with Batik Backgrounds

Mary says:  When paper piecing this block, I labeled all parts of the block with the color of fabric I was using, writing directly on my papers.  It was much easier to piece when I knew immediately, for example that E1 used a red fabric.

Loyal Union Sampler Block G-10 Missouri Star

Missouri Star is pieced per the directions on page 64.

G-10 Mary
Mary – William Morris Fabrics by MODA w ith Batik Backgrounds
Mary says:  When sewing “D” triangles together, don’t start at the pointed end as it can easily get sucked down into the throat plate.  Start at the 90 Degree corner of the triangles.  Using an awl or bamboo stick or toothpick, whatever your tool of choice is, will help guide these tiny triangles under your needle.

G-10 Leslie
Leslie – Midwinter Reds by MODA
Leslie says:  WHen following the step 5, page 14 directions for the “quick-pieced square-on-point” unit, I like to press all layers toward the coner before trimming the seam to 1/4”.  In that way, you can line up the coner triangle with the underneath square.

G-10 Lisa
Lisa – Lario by MODA
Lisa says:  I like to make my half-square and quarter-square triangle units a little larger and then I square them up with the Perfect Half-Square & Quarter Square Triangles Ruler made by June Tailor. I just love the accuracy that this gives me!

G-9 Miss Van Lew's Star

G-9 Jen

Jen – “Sparkler” Fat Stack, a beautiful blend of Purple, Blue and Green Kona Solids

Jen says:  I made templates from the book and English Paper Pieced my block.  I liked being able to work in sections for assembling this block, first the corners, then the center star.  I’m pretty sure I assembled this one during a Brewer Game at Miller Park.

G-9 Stephanie

Stephanie – Downton Abbey

Stephanie says:  Wow, these 45 degree diamonds just keep getting smaller with each block!!  Resist the urge to clip your extra corners!  Also, don't press your Y-seams open!  I feel great triumph every time I finish one of these stars!

Leslie says:  This block goes together very easily by following the paper piecing directions.  However, I don’t recommend trying to paper piece plad fabrics if you want your plaids to match!!

Michigan Beauty is pieced per the directions on page 62 & templates on page 115.

G-7 Leslie

Leslie – Midwinter Reds by MODA

Leslie says:  I had been dreading piecing these rhombuses, but actually they fit together quite nicely.  Just be sure to stop at the seam line when the directions say to sew from point to point only.  That allows the seam to open up and fit the angle that it is being sewn to.

I pressed many seams open to keep them flat.  When the entire block was assembled, I trimmed off any little points that extended onto the background pieces so that they would not be evident from the front.
