Welcome to Week 7!

Block 7 coffee cup is pretty cute.  Pictured we have Jen, Diane & Lisa.

I just LOVE Lisa’s mug.  She chose to do two rows of half square triangles to give her mug a chevron look.

Make sure to pick up the paper piecing worksheet while at Patched Works this week.  You can eliminate a lot of extra seams; especially for the mini mug!  The worksheet will work for blocks 6 & 7.

This week we will also be featuring a fun project using 1 of your smaller mugs.  It’s an adorable gift bag that Moda featured on their Cutting Table blog.  Lisa has added some changes to the pattern so we have both pieces to hand out to you today.  The bonus, if you make it as Moda lists, you’d have a bag for a Yoga Mat!

Lisa will also be on hand for her monthly Back to Basics.  Back to Basics are great because whether you’re new to quilting or need a refresher course, there’s always a tip that can help you strengthen your quilt making skills.

Patched Works 12 Weeks of Christmas – Week 5

Welcome to Week 5!

Block 5 coffee cup is a little challenging but not impossible.  Pictured we have Diane, Jen & Lisa.

You’re making 36 HST’s for this block.  If you’re doing the regular mugs, they finish at 1”, if you’re doing to small mugs, they finish at 1/2”.

Jen says:  Use triangle paper.  Typically with HST’s we iron to the dark side.  Since these HST’s are so small and all sewn together something had to be done to reduce bulk.  For these I ironed everything open.  From the diagonal seams to the connecting straight seams.

Pinwheel Cheat Method

Should you decide making 36 HST’s at these small sizes aren’t your thing, don’t abandon this cup.  There would be nothing wrong with creating ONE pinwheel made from 4 HST units.

For the LARGE size cups you would want them to finish at 3”.  You would cut 2 background squares and 2 colored squares at 3-7/8” each.  Draw a diagonal line on the background squares, pair them up with a colored square, sew 1/4” away from the line on each side, cut apart, iron & sew into a pinwheel.

For the SMALL size cups you would want them to finish at 1-1/2”.   You would cut 2 background squares and 2 colored squares at 2-3/8” each.  Draw a diagonal line on the background squares, pair them up with a colored square, sew 1/4” away from the line on each side, cut apart, iron & sew into a pinwheel.

Look at how itty bitty this HST unit is for the small mugs!!

Jen is making her mugs to go with her Christmas Dishes, aren’t they a good match?

Patched Works 12 Weeks of Christmas – Week 4

We’re continuing on today with our “In From the Cold” coffee cups.   Cup #4 in fact.  Pictured are cups from Diane, Lisa & Jen.

Since Lisa’s mugs are not Christmas related, she needed a different block for her center.  She found her center in the book Pillow POP which is a Design Collective compiled by Heather Bostic.

This week we are continuing with the Mini Mugs as well.  These are an adorable 5” X 7” size.   We will have patterns available in the shop for both Mini Mugs  #1-#3 & #4-#7

Mini Mug #3 – Pictured Lisa & Jen

Also this week we will have a handout that will take the HST section from Week #4 and turn it into paper piecing to reduce the bulk.  This is offered for both size mugs.

The second part of our Wednesday Demo is a Machine Pieced Hexie Mug Rug.  It’s super simple without any Y-Seams.  Glue baste & then zig-zag them together for a quick gift.

Diane’s tip is that you don’t have to make the mugs as pictured.  Her mug body is cut the same as Lisa’s just pieced in a different order.

This week we are continuing with the Mini Mugs as well.  These are an adorable 5” X 7” size.   We will have patterns available in the shop for both Mini Mug #1, #2 & #3.

Also this week we will have a handout that will take the HST section from Week #3 and turn it into paper piecing to reduce the bulk.  This is offered for both size mugs.

Since it is a 1st Wednesday we also are featuring the free Designer Sampler Block of the Month.  Make sure to pick that up as well!

The most exciting thing today is that it’s the award ceremony for our Tula Pink 100 Blocks of Summer.  We will have many customer quilts hanging throughout the store and we will also hold up additional ones for show and tell.  There has been a slight delay on the 100 Blocks of Summer Pins but we will hand those out as soon as they are in (Please note we will NOT be shipping these).  The T-shirts and Quilt Labels are here and will be handed out.
